Matthew 20:28 “even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
The Big Picture
By nature, we are self-serving, proud people. The world and our flesh promote the thought of “looking out for number one” at any cost. We want what is best for ourselves, often at the expense of others. We want to be in control, and we live as if we are invincible. The entire life of Jesus was one of love and service, but the one act of serving that is most often referred to is His washing of His disciples’ feet during the evening of the Passover Feast before His crucifixion. After washing their feet, Jesus said, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:16-17). As Jesus came to serve, so must all of us joyfully accept a life of service to others. As we change from “me” people to “we” people, we begin to share God’s love with others.
How To Pray
One of the hardest things to live out is a life of humility and meekness. Those character traits aren’t traits of weakness, but traits of our Lord. Today, let’s pray that God would grow us in both humility and meekness.
Pray and ask God to open opportunities to serve whether in the church community or in our public community. Ask God to open your eyes to serve someone today.
Thank God for the example of Jesus to lead in humility and to show power under control in the characteristic of meekness.
